November 19, 2010

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Faculty and Vice Chancellors

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you that Professor Michael Goldstein has graciously accepted a request from Chancellor Block and me to serve as interim vice provost for graduate education. He also will serve as interim dean of the Graduate Division. The appointment will take effect January 1, 2011.

Professor Goldstein has been a member of the UCLA faculty in the School of Public Health since 1971. He is currently a professor in the department of community health sciences with a joint appointment in sociology.

He brings to his new role broad experience in academic leadership, including service as UCLA Academic Senate Chair in 2008-09. In this role and in other leadership positions he has held within the Academic Senate, he has worked with hundreds of faculty members from the professional schools and the College of Letters and Science. In addition, Professor Goldstein has served as a department chair and associate dean within the School of Public Health.

Professor Goldstein’s research and teaching focus on complementary, integrative and alternative medicine. His work has explored the use of alternative medicine among a variety of populations, including cancer survivors and people with chronic illnesses.

I very much appreciate Professor Goldstein’s willingness to take on this important role. I also am deeply grateful to Claudia Mitchell-Kernan for her many years of dedicated service to UCLA, including as vice chancellor of graduate studies and dean of the Graduate Division since 1989. We will begin a search for a permanent successor during the coming weeks, and will keep you informed as we initiate the search.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Goldstein and welcoming him to his new role.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
