A Safe Environment for Minors on Campus

To:  Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Executives, Managers, Vice Chancellors, and Vice Provosts

Dear Colleagues:

As one of the world’s great universities, UCLA must always work to protect the health and safety of minors on our campus. All of us within the UCLA community share this obligation; it is vital that we uphold our responsibility to safeguard their well-being and report potential concerns. In order to ensure that we offer an environment where individuals of all ages can live, learn and work safely, Chancellor Block has asked for a comprehensive review of relevant policies and practices.

As a first step, we are initiating a survey to record the locations on campus where minors are engaged in programs and activities, both university-sponsored and non–university-sponsored. To manage this process most effectively, we ask that your department or unit appoint a liaison to provide information about any programs involving youth. Please send contact information for your unit’s designated liaison to Lia Simon, project manager, at lsimon@conet.ucla.edu as soon as possible but no later than Monday, August 13, 2012.

Lia will follow up with the liaison to obtain more detailed information about each program involving minors within your unit’s purview. (Note that this email may be received by several people within your organization, such as the administrative officer, department chair or director. Please coordinate your response with your colleagues.)

Involving minors in UCLA activities is integral to our mission of creating and disseminating knowledge for the betterment of society. Ensuring their safe and appropriate treatment on campus is imperative.

If you have a concern about any potentially inappropriate situations involving minors on campus, please contact the UCLA Police Department immediately at 310-825-1491, or leave an anonymous message at 310-794- 5824.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
