Reappointment of Victoria Sork as Dean of the Division of Life Sciences

May 5, 2015

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

To:   Deans, Vice Chancellors and Vice Provosts

Dear Colleagues:

Following a customary five-year administrative review, Chancellor Block and I have asked Victoria Sork to continue as dean of the Division of Life Sciences. She has accepted the reappointment.

The review committee commended Victoria for being an outstanding scientist who is innovative, effective and strategic. She is a conscientious leader with a clear vision for the Division of Life Sciences, strongly dedicated to enhancing excellence at every level in all of the departments under her supervision. During her first five years, the division restructured the Ph.D. Programs in Biosciences in collaboration with the David Geffen School of Medicine, established the Institute for Quantitative and Computational Biosciences, and began a project to transform the undergraduate curriculum. Victoria has enhanced morale by recognizing the research and teaching contributions of her faculty. Her leadership in promoting diversity and equity among the faculty and building inclusiveness in the classroom was recognized as being an exceptional strength.

Chancellor Block and I look forward to working closely with Victoria in furthering the Division of Life Sciences’ goals and initiatives. UCLA’s faculty, students, alumni, and administration are fortunate to have the benefit of her leadership. Please join me in congratulating Victoria and extending our appreciation to her.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
