July 30, 2018

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

To: Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Vice Chancellors and Vice Provosts, UCLA College Faculty and Staff

Dear Colleagues:

Following a customary five-year administrative review, Chancellor Block and I have asked Patricia Turner to continue as dean and vice provost for undergraduate education. I am pleased to inform you that she has accepted the reappointment.

The review committee commended Pat for her leadership and significant achievements in the past five years, during which undergraduate student enrollment has risen considerably even while state funding declined. Under Pat’s direction, the campus has continued to see a marked increase in four-year graduation rates. A number of programs have thrived during her five-year tenure, including the Fiat Lux Freshman Seminar Program, the Startup UCLA entrepreneurship program and the Arthur Ashe Learning Center. Pat was lauded by the committee for her positive interactions with and advocacy for undergraduate students. She has shown an unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, including her work supporting the Program for Excellence in Education and Research, the Vice Provost Initiative for Pre-College (VIP) Scholars and her contributions to the passage of the College diversity requirement course. In addition, she has displayed strong leadership in preparing for the 2019 WASC Senior College and University Commission’s campus accreditation visit.

In the coming years, Pat will continue her efforts to ensure that each graduating senior departs with a strong foundation of knowledge enhanced by one or more appropriate co-curricular experiences. In partnership with on- and off-campus colleagues, she intends to expand and enhance the caliber of UCLA’s undergraduate research, community learning, entrepreneurship, study abroad and other engagement activities.

Chancellor Block and I look forward to continuing our work with Pat to advance the goals and accomplishments of undergraduate education at UCLA. Please join me in congratulating Pat and extending our appreciation to her.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
