Dear Colleagues:
We write to share an important update on UCLA’s digital accessibility compliance deadline. The updated UC Policy IMT-1300 requires complying with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA by April 24, 2026, and with it, a requirement that all new digital content (websites, social media posts, documents, applications, course materials and technology purchases) meet the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. All content created prior to April 24, 2026, should be remediated, archived or removed in accordance with the policy’s prioritization language by May 11, 2026. Limited exceptions include, for example, archived content (meeting certain criteria) and social media posts before April 24, 2026.
To support campuswide compliance, UCLA is launching an IT Accessibility Policy Program (ITAPP), which includes designated institutional leaders serving in oversight roles — a key milestone in our commitment to making UCLA’s digital environment fully accessible to our students, faculty, staff and the public. We will share additional information about this program and designated leaders in the coming weeks. Digital accessibility is not a one-time compliance event: it is an ongoing institutional commitment and a shared responsibility for all employees.
What this means for UCLA
Through ITAPP, designated leaders across UCLA will coordinate accessibility efforts, review exceptions, support departments and help ensure course content meets accessibility standards. Faculty and staff across campus can expect continued guidance, training and resources as we work together to remediate barriers and build accessible practices into how we teach, communicate, research and operate.
A note on federal timing
The federal government’s deadline for compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act has been extended to April 26, 2027. However, the Section 504 digital access compliance deadline is May 11, 2026 for remediating all content created prior to April 24, 2026, with some limited exceptions. Section 504 and Title II impose the same substantive digital access obligations.
