Appointment of Jim Davis as Vice Provost, Information Technology
UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
Administrative Officers, Deans, Directors, Vice Chancellors
Dear Colleagues:
Chancellor Block and I are pleased to announce the appointment of Jim Davis as vice provost, information technology (IT), effective January 1, 2010. Under this title, he will serve as UCLA’s chief academic technology officer.
Jim joined UCLA in 2000 as associate vice chancellor, information technology. A decade of effort culminated this past year with the UCLA IT Strategic Plan: 2009 – 2018, which underscores the importance of academic IT to UCLA’s future competitiveness in research and education. Jim’s new title responds to the plan and provides UCLA with strong leadership as the use of information technology within the academic enterprise rapidly expands.
With this appointment, Jim and the Office of Information Technology will shift their focus on new responsibilities for IT programs and infrastructure in support of UCLA’s academic mission. Jim will work in partnership with the vice chancellors for academic personnel, research and student affairs, vice provost for undergraduate education, Council of Deans, Academic Senate and Information Technology Planning Board (ITPB), and in collaboration with our academic units, he will have direct responsibilities for the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE), the Institute for Informatics (I2), cross-cutting educational technology initiatives and academic IT application services.
Jim will continue to be responsible for UCLA’s strategic IT planning, governance and policy processes and will continue to work closely with Administrative Vice Chancellor Sam Morabito. Administration will assume full responsibility of institutional IT infrastructure, business and data services. These responsibilities will include excellence and effectiveness in central IT operations, institutional solutions, service delivery, regulatory compliance, security and enterprise architecture, and management practices.
Please join me in congratulating Jim on his new appointment. Chancellor Block and I look forward to his continued leadership with a substantially increased focus on IT for UCLA’s academic mission.
Sincerely,
Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
