Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Vice Chancellors, Department of Spanish and Portuguese Faculty, and Faculty affiliated with the International Institute

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to inform you that Randal Johnson has graciously accepted an offer from Chancellor Block and me to serve as interim vice provost for international studies.  In this role, he also will direct the International Institute.  The appointment will take effect July 1, 2010.

Distinguished Professor Johnson has been a member of the UCLA faculty since 1994.  He brings to his new role broad experience in academic leadership, including service as chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (1996-2001), director of the UC Education Abroad Program in Brazil (2002-04) and director of the Latin American Institute (2005-present).  The Latin American Institute provides an institutional base of support for UCLA’s community of faculty Latin Americanists in more than 30 disciplines and professional fields.

Professor Johnson is an internationally recognized specialist on Brazilian cinema.  His research and teaching have focused on Luso-Brazilian literature and culture, sociology of literature and culture, television, Latin American cinema, popular culture and cultural policy.  In 1999, he received the Order of the Southern Cross from the Brazilian government.

I very much appreciate Professor Johnson’s willingness to take on this important role.  I also am deeply grateful to Nick Entrikin for his dedicated service as acting vice provost since 2007 and vice provost since 2009.  We will begin a search for a permanent successor to Vice Provost Entrikin in late fall 2010 or early winter 2011.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Johnson and in welcoming him to this important role.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
