Appointment of Interim Dean of Continuing Education and UCLA Extension

December 19, 2012

UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost

To:  Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, UCLA Extension Instructors and Staff, and Vice Chancellors

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to inform you that Michelle Stiles has accepted a request from Chancellor Block and me to serve as interim dean of continuing education and UCLA Extension, effective January 2, 2013.

Michelle brings to this role over 12 years of service to UCLA Extension and extensive leadership experience. She has served as associate dean for administration since 2009, having previously held the positions of director of budget and financial services (2001–09) and budget director (2000–01). In her current role, Michelle is the chief financial and administrative officer for continuing education and UCLA Extension. She supports the dean in advancing programmatic and institutional goals by chairing strategic initiatives, overseeing special projects and partnerships, providing analysis and oversight of capital planning and acquisitions, and representing UCLA Extension on campus and systemwide committees and in public/private programming initiatives that further Extension’s strategic goals. Michelle holds an Ed. D. from the University of Southern California; a master’s in public administration from California State University, Fullerton; a master’s in library science from San Jose State University; and a B.A. in management from the University of Phoenix.

Chancellor Block and I have every confidence that UCLA Extension will continue to function smoothly under Michelle’s capable and seasoned leadership, and we very much appreciate her willingness to fill this critical role during this period of transition. Please join me in welcoming her into this important post.

Please also join me in thanking Dean Cathy Sandeen for her leadership of UCLA Extension during the past six years. We are grateful for her contributions to UCLA and wish her every success in her new position as vice president for education attainment and innovation at the American Council on Education.

In the coming weeks, I will form a search committee to identify candidates for Cathy’s successor, and I will keep you informed as we initiate the search.

Sincerely,

Scott L. Waugh

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
