Appointment of Timothy F. Brewer as Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary and Cross-campus Affairs

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Timothy F. Brewer to the newly established position of Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary and Cross-campus Affairs, effective January 1, 2013. In this capacity, Dr. Brewer will be responsible for working with faculty and campus leadership to promote interdisciplinary and cross-campus research, education and service programs in thematic areas of strategic significance to the campus as a whole.

Dr. Brewer is director of global health programs and an associate professor of medicine and associate member of epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational health at McGill University Medical School. He has published extensively on using analytic methods to optimize the population-based control of infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis and HIV. He has served on advisory boards and review panels for the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, among others, and he recently served as co-chair of the CDC’s National Working Group on Tuberculosis in the Foreign-born and was a member of the National Tuberculosis Education Steering Committee.

Board certified in infectious diseases, Dr. Brewer maintains a hospital-based practice in addition to his research and administrative responsibilities. As program director for the International Society for Infectious Diseases, he has extensive experience developing and overseeing training, education and service programs for physicians and scientists in low- and middle-income countries. Representative projects include international congresses, training workshops, fellowship and grants programs, and ProMED-mail, the society’s program for monitoring emerging diseases. Partners in these projects have included organizations such as the WHO, NIH, CDC, the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Pan-American Infectious Diseases Society and the International Society of Chemotherapy, as well as numerous academic institutions and companies; and the projects have been supported by grants from the NIH, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation, among others.

Dr. Brewer holds a B.A. in history from Yale University, an M.D. from New York Medical College and an M.P.H. from the Harvard School of Public Health. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Mount Auburn Hospital/Harvard Medical School’s new clinician teaching award and senior residents’ consultant of the year award, and Harvard Medical School’s inaugural Klaus Peter International Teaching Award.

With Dr. Brewer’s leadership and collaboration as vice provost, we hope to extend and enhance the excellent work ongoing in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, the health sciences, the International Institute, the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, and numerous other UCLA research centers and academic programs, building on our success and increasing our capacity for interdisciplinary research, teaching and learning.
