Professor Jan Reiff to Serve as Academic Senate Liaison for Online Education
UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
To: Deans, Vice Chancellors, Vice Provosts, Department Chairs, Senate Leadership, Directors, Chief Administrative Officers
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to inform you that Professor Janice Reiff, immediate past chair of the Academic Senate, has agreed to serve as UCLA’s Academic Senate–Administration Liaison for Online Education in 2014–15. In this role, she will help lead UCLA’s planning for online education while enhancing coordination between faculty and administration.
During Jan’s terms as Senate chair-elect and Senate chair, she spearheaded important advances in our campus’s online education efforts. In addition to organizing two online education summits, she played a key role in our planning for online course and program development.
As we consider the future of online and hybrid instruction at UCLA, we recognize the need for policy development, funding, infrastructure and capacity building, support for faculty, and assessment. Over the next year, Jan will collaborate with faculty and administrators to develop a comprehensive institutional proposal for encouraging and sustaining online and hybrid learning at UCLA. This proposal will consider courses and degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as self-supporting certificate and degree programs. It will be rooted in a set of principles that underscore the priority we place on educational quality.
Jan will also consult with many of you over the course of the year, and I appreciate your giving her your full cooperation. Please also join me in thanking her for this important service to UCLA, which advances online learning and strengthens shared governance.
Sincerely,
Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
