Interim Leadership for Continuing Education and UCLA Extension
UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
To: Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, Vice Chancellors and Vice Provosts, Instructors and Staff in Continuing Education and UCLA Extension
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce that I have appointed a team to provide interim leadership for Continuing Education and UCLA Extension (UNEX) following Wayne Smutz’s departure as dean. This team is composed of three individuals — Tom Oser, Carla Hayn and Sonia Luna.
Tom Oser, who currently holds a visiting professor appointment in technology management at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, has agreed to serve as interim vice provost for special projects. Tom is an experienced operational executive with an extensive background in turnaround situations and the development and delivery of higher education programs.
UNEX will also be assisted by Carla Hayn, the senior associate dean of the Executive MBA and Global Immersion programs at the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a professor of accounting. She has experience with online education and a strong understanding of the local and international student markets, and has helped restructure many companies.
Sonia Luna, executive director of the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute, will also serve on the interim leadership team. She has a thorough knowledge of UCLA’s financial reporting system and budget process. Sonia has assisted the Chancellor’s Office in the past with other reorganizations on campus.
The June 2018 UNEX Huron Report provided an objective perspective on the environment at UNEX and its operations. Further, it gave us a road map for moving forward. I have tasked the interim leadership team to direct and oversee the timely implementation of the Huron Group recommendations and advise me on actions needed to restructure UNEX and return the organization to fiscal solvency and sustainability.
Throughout this process, Tom, Carla and Sonia will be working with many of you so that together we can ensure that UNEX remains an instrumental part of UCLA, Los Angeles and the global community at large.
Sincerely,
Scott L. Waugh
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
