UCLA Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
To: Administrative Officers, Deans, Department Chairs, Directors, UCLA Extension Instructors and Staff, Vice Chancellors and Vice Provosts
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Eric Bullard as Dean of Continuing Education and UCLA Extension, effective January 6, 2020.
With more than 19 years of experience in continuing education, distance education, outreach and engagement, Dr. Bullard brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to this critical position. Dr. Bullard currently serves as the associate vice president of international programs and global engagement and dean of the College of Professional and Global Education at California State University, Los Angeles. In these roles, he provides strategic and operational leadership for all professional, continuing and international education initiatives for Cal State L.A., including the university’s downtown Los Angeles campus. Since arriving at Cal State L.A. in 2014, Dr. Bullard has led large-scale and high-impact university initiatives, including the establishment of Cal State L.A. Downtown (a 30,000-square-foot campus in the heart of Los Angeles); significant growth and expansion of self-supporting degree, certificate, and non-credit programs and classes; expansion of international collaboration and partnerships; and increasing international faculty and scholar research, international student enrollment and student participation in study abroad. Previously, he served as associate dean of the College of Continuing and Professional Education at California State University, Long Beach; associate dean for extended learning at California State University, San Marcos; and director of regional and online degree programs at California State University, Bakersfield.
Dr. Bullard views his role at the university as a steward for public good. As a first-generation college graduate and alumnus of public higher education, Dr. Bullard is committed to the public teaching and research mission of higher education, and sees public universities as change agents for individuals, families, cities and society at large. Dr. Bullard is an active member of several professional associations, including the University Professional and Continuing Education Association, the Association for Continuing Higher Education (chair, ACHE West Region, 2014‒15), the Association of International Educators and the European Association for International Education, and served as an editorial board member for the Journal of Continuing Higher Education (2012‒16). One of three deans appointed to the CSU systemwide committee for continuing and extended education, he has also served as chair of the CSU Budget and Resources Committee and as a member of the Policy Committee, Strategic Communication Committee, Technology Steering Committee and other city, campus and systemwide committees. He holds a B.A. in political science and a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Bakersfield, and a Ph.D. in education from Colorado State University.
I want to thank search/advisory committee members for assembling an outstanding pool of candidates and for their roles in recruiting Eric. Gregg Goldman, vice chancellor and chief financial officer, was the committee chair. Other members were:
- Barbara M. Bates-Jensen – professor of nursing and of medicine; member, Committee on Continuing and Community Education; member, Steering Committee for Online Teaching and Learning
