Reappointment of C. Cindy Fan as Vice Provost for International Studies and Global Engagement
Dear Colleagues:
Following a customary five-year administrative review, Chancellor Block and I have asked Cindy Fan to continue as vice provost for international studies and global engagement. I am pleased to inform you that she has accepted the reappointment.
The review committee commended Cindy for her commitment to expanding UCLA’s international reach and footprint in a collaborative manner, while maintaining an understanding of various cultures. As an international brand ambassador for UCLA, Cindy plays a leading role in multiple networks, including the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, leading groups of senior international officers (SIOs) in the U.S. and internationally, and the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP). She has also developed and hosted UCLA Global Forums and traveled extensively to strengthen and promote the university’s global engagement strategy and commitment to solving the world’s most pressing challenges in collaboration with peer institutions. Her counterparts at other U.S. and international universities recognize and respect the depth and level of her international engagement activities.
Cindy is a highly successful fundraiser whose strong development efforts helped the International Institute greatly exceed its UCLA Centennial Campaign target, establish programs that foster educational outreach, and develop new revenue streams. She has stabilized the International Institute’s operations and improved its policy and procedural framework through the creation of instruments for consensus building and shared governance, and streamlined the process for agreements between UCLA and other international academic institutions. Furthermore, Cindy has strengthened the academic mission of the institute by increasing its teaching capacity through a model of joint faculty hires.
During the next five years, Cindy’s focus will be to work with the International Institute’s constituencies to finalize and implement its strategic plan, collaborate across campus to advance UCLA’s global and local engagement priorities, create new partnerships to integrate all aspects of campus into synergistic collaborations on global challenges, and further strengthen and broaden UCLA’s global outreach efforts.
Chancellor Block and I look forward to continuing our work with Cindy to advance the mission of international studies and global engagement at UCLA. Please join me in congratulating Cindy on her many accomplishments in this role to date and extending our appreciation to her.
Sincerely,
Emily A. Carter
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
