Anna Spain Bradley to step down as Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Dear Bruin Community:
I write to share the news that Anna Spain Bradley, who has served as vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) since September of 2020, has informed me that she will step down from her role effective June 30, 2023. Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley, who is also a professor of law, will transition into a new role as my special advisor on strategic planning and values. We will share plans for interim leadership of the Office of EDI as soon as they are in place.
Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley began her tenure in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and powerful calls for racial justice in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Drawing on her expertise as a human rights scholar and advocate, she helped UCLA navigate important issues such as these while also expanding the EDI office’s mission and services to support the full diversity of our Bruin community.
Under her leadership, the EDI office worked with campus stakeholders to roll out major initiatives including the UCLA EDI Education Series and the Native American and Pacific Islander Bruins Rising Initiative. Additionally, she and her team played a central role in implementing aspects of the Moreno Report recommendations and the UC Gender and Lived Name Recognition Policy.
Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley also shepherded significant changes to UCLA’s EDI infrastructure. These include the establishment of the UCLA EDI Civil Rights Office, which brought together in one place UCLA’s various Title IX and discrimination investigation units, as well as the transition of the ADA/504 Compliance function from student affairs to the EDI office. She also prioritized organizational health within the EDI office itself, instituting structural equity adjustments and embracing an inclusive leadership framework.
Chancellor Block and I are grateful to Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley for advancing our institutional values including making UCLA a better place for Bruins of different backgrounds and identities. During a period of unprecedented demands on the EDI office, she has worked to ensure that our university is welcoming and supportive of all.
Please join me in thanking Vice Chancellor Spain Bradley for her service to our community.
Sincerely,
Darnell Hunt
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
