Appointment of Gary A. Clark, Jr. as Associate Vice Chancellor, UCLA Enrollment Management

September 5, 2023

Dear Colleagues:

Following a nationwide search, I am pleased to announce that Gary A. Clark, Jr. has been appointed as associate vice chancellor, UCLA Enrollment Management — a new title for the role that oversees our enrollment and undergraduate admission efforts.

Clark joined UCLA in 2012 and has served as executive director of undergraduate admission for more than a decade. Under his leadership, we have become the most-applied-to university in the U.S. with applications increasing 91% and enrollment of students from underrepresented groups growing by 49%.

Clark has served as the interim vice provost for enrollment management since October 2022. During his time as interim, Clark focused on creating opportunities and access for students. He worked closely with our development and advancement teams to support the UCLA Affordability Initiative that launched in April 2023, and increased targeted scholarship efforts to support the enrollment of more students from low-income backgrounds.

With Clark at the helm, the enrollment management division continued to attract and enroll an increasingly diverse group of new students and ensured the successful evaluation of more than 170,000 applications for fall 2023. Consistent with our commitment to deepening ties with Los Angeles and supported by UCOP, Clark helped expand the number of Early Academic Outreach Program partner high schools across the greater L.A. area.

Prior to joining UCLA, Clark served in senior admissions roles at USC, Pitzer College, and the College of William and Mary. He has trained new admission staff as a faculty member for the Western Association of College Admission Counseling Summer Admission Institute. A respected expert in higher education, Clark regularly speaks at forums and conferences about recruitment, admission and enrollment practices. He has also served on the executive board of both the College Board Western Regional Council and the Association of Chief Admission Officers of Public Universities.

I would like to thank the search committee members for assembling an outstanding pool of candidates and helping select the right candidate for this important position. Lynn Vavreck, Marvin Hoffenberg Professor of American Politics and Public Policy, was the committee chair. Other members were:

  • Elizabeth Gonzalez, director, Hispanic Serving Institution
  • Monroe Gorden, vice chancellor, Student Affairs
  • Christina Rivera, executive senior associate athletic director, internal operations/senior woman administrator, UCLA Athletics
  • Julie Sina, associate vice chancellor, Alumni Affairs

One of the keys to Clark’s effectiveness has been his commitment to collaboration and building relationships across campus and throughout the region. In this spirit of collaboration and to further UCLA’s continued commitment to inclusive excellence, I will establish an advisory board to leverage faculty expertise in support of enrollment management’s ongoing success.

Chancellor Block and I are confident that Clark’s leadership, extensive admissions experience, dedication to diversifying the student body and knowledge of student recruitment will continue to help us attract world-class students to UCLA. Please join me in congratulating him on this appointment and wishing him the very best in this important role.

Sincerely,

Darnell Hunt
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
