Appointment of Gary A. Clark Jr. as Interim Vice Provost for Enrollment Management

September 7, 2022

Dear Colleagues:

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gary A. Clark Jr. as interim vice provost for enrollment management, effective October 1. Clark has served as executive director of our Office of Undergraduate Admission for 10 years and has been a trusted partner to outgoing Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Youlonda Copeland-Morgan throughout their tenures at UCLA. He will be a capable steward for the division and ensure our campus continues to make progress towards key enrollment goals as we embark upon the search for Copeland-Morgan’s successor.

Clark joined UCLA in 2012 after serving in senior admissions roles at USC, Pitzer College, and the College of William and Mary. During his tenure at the helm of our undergraduate admission office, applications have risen by 91% from just over 91,000 to nearly 175,000, making UCLA the most applied-to university in the U.S. He has also overseen a significant increase in the rate at which admitted students are choosing to enroll at UCLA, including a 49% increase in enrollment of students from underrepresented groups. Under Clark’s leadership, UCLA’s most recent incoming classes were among the most diverse and the most accomplished in campus history.

Clark’s successes in the admissions realm have stemmed in large part from his collaborative mindset, talent for innovation, and focus on building relationships and partnerships within communities across the region and state. He has worked closely with UCLA faculty and alumni groups, guidance counselors, school districts and faith-based organizations in his efforts to recruit excellent students from a range of backgrounds to UCLA.

With his ample expertise and leadership experience, his commitment to diversifying the student body and his insights into recruiting world-class students, Clark will ensure that the enrollment management team continues to excel in the months ahead. We hope you will join us in wishing him the very best in this important position.

Sincerely,
