Guidance on UAW-represented Employee Appointments for Winter 2023

December 2, 2022

Dear Colleagues:

We write to provide clarity regarding winter term 2023 appointments for employees covered by the four United Auto Workers bargaining units — academic student employees, postdoctoral scholars, academic researchers and graduate student researchers. Please distribute this information, provided by the UC Office of the President, directly to those individuals in your units who oversee appointment decisions.

Key points:

• Appointment decisions cannot take into consideration a person’s involvement, participation or non-participation in the strike. If a person would have received a winter 2023 appointment in the absence of bargaining or the strike, the appointment should be issued. If a person would not have otherwise received an appointment, the appointment should not be issued.

• All appointment letters for winter 2023 should include the language: “This appointment is subject to amendment based on any changes to applicable collective bargaining agreements.”

We hope for a fair and equitable resolution of the strike soon. As a reminder, you can find resources, FAQs and the most current information about the strike on our Strike Updates and Support web page.

If you have further questions, please write to strikeinfo@ucla.edu.

Thank you all for your dedication and continued commitment to our academic enterprise.

Sincerely,

Darnell Hunt
