Our Draft Refreshed True Bruin Values – Share Your Input

Dear Bruin Community:

For more than two decades, our True Bruin Values have been a touchstone for UCLA — a way to express our shared ideals and aspirations. Our original values of Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Service and Excellence have served us well and will continue to be important aspects of our everyday lives. At the same time, we also recognized the need to refresh these values for a new era.

Since March 2024, a dedicated steering committee of students, staff and faculty has worked to do just that. Through surveys and dialogue, the committee heard from thousands of Bruins about what matters most to our community today. Their voices shaped the draft refreshed True Bruin Values we share with you now:

• Integrity & Accountability – We speak with honesty and take responsibility for our impact.
• Service with Purpose – We use our roles to support and uplift our communities.
• Belonging Through Action – We create spaces where every Bruin feels seen and valued.
• Curiosity & Growth – We stay open to new ideas, people and possibilities.
• Collaboration with Humility – We build across differences with respect and shared purpose.

These values reflect both who we are and who we aspire to be as a university. They are not final — this is the beginning of the next phase of engagement. Just as the process so far has been collaborative, the work of refining and finalizing the statement about our values will continue to depend on you.

There are three ways to get involved in this phase of engagement:

 1.   Attend a UCLA Connects: Campus Community Conversation to discuss the values with peers. These will take place in November, February and May, and spots are limited. Register for the Nov. 3 session.

 2.   Host your own conversation using our Campus Community Conversations Toolkit with your team, class or student group.

 3.   Share your voice online by submitting feedback or a story of someone you have seen living out UCLA’s values.

We encourage every member of our Bruin community — students, staff, faculty — to take part in this effort. The statement of values that we ultimately finalize and carry forward will only be as strong as the collective voices and action behind them.

Thank you to the many Bruins who have already contributed their ideas and reflections. Your input has been invaluable. Together, we can ensure the True Bruin Values are a meaningful source of inspiration, accountability and shared purpose for the years ahead.
