Upcoming Labor Union Activity and Resources
Dear Bruin Community:
As of this afternoon, UCLA and other locations across the University of California system are expecting labor union activity on Nov. 17–18, unless agreements are reached before then.
UC is in active negotiations with five unions representing 12 bargaining units, working earnestly and in good faith to resolve remaining contract disputes. UC has put forward substantial, solutions-oriented proposals that directly respond to union priorities and reflect its commitment to fair, forward-looking agreements. We are proud to share that the university has reached a strong tentative agreement with the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE), marking a significant step forward now awaiting member ratification. For updates on these matters, please visit UCnet.
These anticipated labor activities come amidst a very difficult time for our entire university system, as we face attacks on the value of higher education, budget challenges, workplace reductions and a hiring freeze, and further funding reductions at the state and federal levels.
UCLA, including UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine, is developing plans to minimize disruptions to campus and clinical operations, and potentially affected units have received direct outreach from Employee & Labor Relations. University employees in supervisory or managerial roles should refrain from engaging in conversations with union members about any aspects of a strike, including discussions about whether union members will participate in strike activities. It is also important that supervisors and managers avoid making statements that condemn or praise individuals’ strike activities, and refrain from directly dealing with union members regarding negotiations or grievances. These guidelines also apply to social media postings.
Individuals on strike are legally permitted to picket near the exterior of university properties and building entrances. Strike conduct that is unlawful includes, but is not limited to, blocking vehicles and/or persons from accessing a property/facility/building; preventing people from walking freely across spaces generally open to the public; interfering with meetings, classes, research or other university functions that are part of regular campus operational activities; threatening violence; vandalizing/defacing university property; and physical attacks. The safety of our community is paramount and remains the priority during strikes and other related activities.
