Upcoming Strike and Resources

March 27, 2025

Dear Bruin Community:

The American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) have notified the University of California Office of the President that their members at UCLA and across the UC system plan to engage in a one-day strike, on Tuesday, April 1

Employees represented by UPTE include those who provide a variety of clinical and medical services, as well as scientific and technical support services for academic and scientific research. Employees represented by AFSCME include those who provide patient support services and service workers who provide custodial, transportation, dining, and other support services at campuses and medical centers.

This action comes as UC continues to attempt to enter into agreements with AFSCME and UPTE — and during a very difficult time for our entire university, as we face attacks on the value of higher education, budget challenges, a hiring freeze, and further funding reductions at the state and federal levels. UC has presented meaningful proposals to address union requests, including wage increases. Learn more about negotiations.

UCLA, including UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine, are developing plans to minimize disruptions to campus and clinical operations on April 1. University employees in supervisory or managerial roles should refrain from engaging in conversations with union members about any aspects of the strike, including whether or not union members will engage in strike activities. It is also important that supervisors and managers avoid making statements condemning or praising individuals’ strike activities, and refrain from dealing directly with union members in regard to negotiations or grievances. These guidelines apply to verbal and written communications, including postings on social media.

Individuals on strike are legally permitted to picket near the exterior of university properties and building entrances. Strike conduct that is unlawful includes, but is not limited to, blocking vehicles and/or persons from accessing a property/facility/building; preventing people from walking freely across spaces generally open to the public; interfering with meetings, classes, research or other university functions that are part of regular campus operational activities; threatening violence; vandalizing/defacing university property; and physical attacks. The safety of our community is paramount and remains the priority during strikes and other related activities.
