Update on the DGSOM Dean Search
Dear David Geffen School of Medicine Community:
I write to inform you that the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP) has initiated the search process for the next dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. As you know, this is a critical leadership position at UCLA and within the health sciences, and one that will play a central role in shaping and advancing the DGSOM’s important mission of research, education, patient care and community engagement in the years to come.
In preparation for the formal launch of the search, we invite recommendations for faculty members to serve on the DGSOM dean search/advisory committee. Recommendations, which should be submitted via this nomination form by Friday, May 27, will be reviewed by the Office of the EVCP and the Academic Senate Committee on Committees. While the size and composition of the search/advisory committee itself is limited, we are committed to a comprehensive and inclusive search process that incorporates the perspectives of DGSOM students, staff and faculty through a variety of channels.
We are currently in the midst of hiring an executive search firm to assist us with the dean search, and expect that the consultants will begin engaging with members of the DGSOM community this summer. Once the search/advisory committee is convened, work on the search will begin in earnest in hopes that we can identify the next dean by late spring of 2023. As has been our recent practice, our next DGSOM dean will report to the EVCP on the academic side and to the vice chancellor for health sciences on the clinical side.
DGSOM Interim Dean Steven Dubinett has graciously agreed to continue serving as interim dean of the school until our next dean is named. Chancellor Block, Vice Chancellor Mazziotta and I remain thankful for Dr. Dubinett’s leadership during this period of change.
At a time in which society continues to grapple with the pandemic as well as widespread disparities in healthcare, the DGSOM’s work across its teaching, research, clinical and community engagement spheres is paramount. I look forward to working with Interim Dean Dubinett over the next several months and to the selection of a dean who will further advance the DGSOM’s crucial work.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Levine
Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost
